Following suspicions that UK-linked Facebook pages have been reproducing copyrighted news articles word-for-word, several Facebook pages and groups are to be investigated for alleged copyright infringement.
Currently, the investigations mainly focus on ‘far-right’ and ‘hate-inciting’ Facebook groups, which are believed to have repeatedly taken articles from established news sites and rebranded them as their own in a ‘copy and paste’ manner.
According to reports, far-right Facebook pages to be investigated include Britain’s First, Christian Fightback News, Counter Jihad UK and Patriot News Hub.
Accordingly, such groups are allegedly unlawfully making money from pay-per-click advertising without referencing or back-linking to the original source of the article(s).
Facebook’s terms and conditions specifically prohibit the infringement of another party’s intellectual property rights, however whether any further action will be taken by the social media giant remains yet to be seen.
