In just over a year, Mackrell Turner Garrett has quickly become one of the UK’s leading firms in the provision of legal services to the country’s growing cannabis industry, a fact that has been recognised by the judges at this year’s Law Society Excellence Awards.
A highlight of the profession’s calendar, the Law Society Excellence Awards recognise the very best firms and individuals in the country’s legal sector.
The London-based international firm, Mackrell Turner Garrett, has been selected for the Excellence in Business Development shortlist at the ceremony, thanks to the rapid expansion of its cannabis law department.
Launched in 2018, the department has become a leading adviser to the UK’s burgeoning cannabis industry, with the firm working on many significant deals and assisting with regulatory matters for some of the world’s largest cannabis companies.
The firm has acquired many new clients and instructions from the likes of the UK’s Cannabis Trades Association, who it has acted for to challenge the “novel food” classification of CBD at the European Commission.
Its solicitors have also shared their expertise in the national press and on the radio.
Robert Jappie, Head of Cannabis Law at Mackrell Turner Garrett, said: “It is a real honour to be shortlisted at the Law Society Excellence Awards for our work in the UK cannabis industry. Before launching the department, we undertook significant research into the field and looked at where legislation is heading.
“By establishing this practice early, we are ahead of the curve and have been pleased by the reception our department has received. We look forward to finding out whether we have won later this year.”
Chris Lane, Head of Business Development and Marketing, added: “A lot of hard work and investment has gone into the promotion and development of our cannabis law services, and it is clear that the judges can see the effect it is having on the UK’s legal services market.
“Our list of clients in this sector is growing almost daily and we have high hopes for success in this area in the future based on the initial response we have had.”
The launch of the department was also recognised at the 2019 Legal Week Innovation Awards, where the firm won the Business Development Innovation Award.
Mackrell Turner Garrett’s Managing Partner and originator of this idea, Nigel Rowley concluded: “To be shortlisted for a second award for the development of our cannabis law services is a real honour. We are very excited about this new area of law and the opportunities it is opening for investment in the UK.”
