One of London and Birmingham’s leading legal firms, Mackrell Solicitors, has appointed experienced sports journalist Gary Newbon MBE as its newest consultant as it looks to expand its Sports and Entertainment law services.

With more than 50 years of sports television presenting behind him, including 36 years at ITV and 14 at Sky Sports, Gary is well known throughout the industry for his expertise.

He is a three-time winner of the coveted Royal Television Shows award and the recipient of an MBE for services to sports, media and charity, with a citation for his development of women in sports television.

He joins Mackrell Solicitors to help its Sports and Entertainment Team develop new relationships and expand its client base further.

Speaking about his appointment, Gary said: “I am excited to be joining such a passionate team of sports lawyers, who put the interests of athletes, agents and clubs at the centre of their services.

“I hope that my many connections and understanding of the sports industry prove useful to the firm in the years to come.”

Amongst the highlights of his career are his coverage of seven football World Cups and three Olympic Games for ITV, his nine years at TalkSPORT and his Sky Sports shows Time of Our Lives and Sporting Heroes, which featured interviews with the biggest names in sport.

Gary is also responsible for bringing Jimmy Greaves, Andy Gray, Andy Townsend and Gary Neville into television as football pundits and commentators, and proudly appointed Barbara Slater as the first Woman sports reporter on English TV. She is now the Director of Sport at the BBC.

Outside of broadcasting, Gary does media training for several CEOs and writes newspaper columns through his company Prime Ticket Productions. He is also widely involved in charity work and is President of the Lord’s Taverners in the West Midlands and a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats.
